How to Plan a Hiking Trip to the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a mysterious place full of intoxicating beauty. It is also dangerous and should be treated with respect. Knowing how to plan a hiking trip to the Grand Canyon can literally mean the difference between life and death.

How to plan a hiking trip to the Grand Canyon.

First. Chose what type of hiking you want to do. The Grand Canyon offers a variety of ways to experience all the area has to offer, while remaining as safe as is possible in such an enviroment. Going off on your own, unless you have taken courses and planned accordingly, is not recommended.

Instructions

1

Types of hiking

A.-Toured. Recommended. Be guided through the wonders of a short day trail, a weekend descent into the Canyon, or customize your trip. Hike all the way or take Burro’s to the bottom. Visit all the basic features with a knowledgeable and well trained guide.

B-Alone- Staying close to trails and doing the basics. You should be well prepared for this and have had training in wilderness survival, among other things. This is not recommended for those with small children or those with medical problems. It’s simply to far away from help if you need it. On a guided tour, those leading are in constant contact with others who can send rescue personnel.

C- Extreme- Not recommended for those without the proper training. Thrill seekers love the Grand Canyon. The ability to feel alone with your thought is also another draw for choosing this type of hiking and for those who know what thy are doing, have a wonderful time. You’ll be glad you went.

Warning: Those without training may not ever leave.

 Checklist.

*If using a Tour, you need to register for it, which usually requires you to pay at least a deposit at that time. Ask them important questions, like how long is it and what should we bring vs what’s supplied as a part of the package you’re ordering.

*What to take. Make a list of everything you need and the day before you’re off, go over you’re already packed bags to be sure you have everything. You’ll need the following,(Each person):

*A first aid kit.
*A map of the area and surrounding area.
*Water and food.
*Light clothing that covers legs and exposed skin.
*A sweater of jacket-nights get cold.
*A fire kit.
*A small weapon, such as mace or a pocket knife.
*Sleeping bag/tent/arrangements.
*A flashlight and extra batteries.
*A form of communication, such as a cell phone and extra batteries for your portable charger.

Transportation.

How do you plan to get to the Grand Canyon If you live close, take a taxi there and back, so you do not have to worry about leaving your vehicle unattended or pay for it to stay there while you hike. If being dropped off and picked up is not an option, use the following rules:

*Leave nothing valuable in the car.

*Locked up tight.

*Unless the off button on your keys will reach to where it’s parked at, turn the alarm off or you may get towed by park security for disturbing the peace.

*Notify the parking area security how long you will be gone and ask them to check on it for you.

*Do not leave food in your car, even out o sight, unless it is unopened and in an airtight container. You don’t want to come back and find out your stash of chocolate bars was raided by bears.

Now that you know how to plan a hiking trip to the Grand Canyon, have fun and be safe!
