Gardening Equipment

Nearly every gardener has some type of gardening equipment.  In fact, it’s nearly impossible to have a garden without used gardening equipment.  What kind of gardening equipment you use will obviously depend on the size and extent of your garden, what you are able to handle, if you want to spend a lot of time in your garden or get done quickly, and finally, how much money you are willing to spend.

While many gardeners do not have expensive or high-tech gardening tools, all of them have some type of gardening equipment for cultivating.  Tools for cultivating can include both hand held tools and power tools.  What kind you buy depends on how serious of a gardener you are.  Hand tools include your everyday items like shovels, spading forks, rakes, trowels, and diggers.  These can all be used to get a garden ready for planting and are relatively easy and do not require much strength to use.  Other tools include a wheel cultivator, pickax, and mattock.

While power tools are a little more expensive than hand tools, they really cut down on the hard labor.  The most essential piece of gardening equipment is undoubtedly the tiller.  The tiller will break up the ground and get it ready for planting, chop up any debris, and help mix in fertilizer and compost.  If you don’t want to spend the money on a tiller you can hire someone or rent a tiller for one time use.  Other power tools that are very popular include chippers, garden shredders, and chain-saws.

If you have shrubs, hedges, or small trees in your yard, pruning tools are a vital piece of gardening equipment.  Pruning shears are good for branches about ¾” in diameter, while lopping shears can handle branches from a half inch up to about 2 inches.  Pole pruners are on a pole and can reach branches about 15 feet above ground.  Hedge shears and pruning saws are both larger, more heavy duty pruning tools for the serious gardener.

Since your plants must be watered in order to survive, and lets face it, it doesn’t rain whenever we want it to, gardening equipment for watering is a must have.  The one thing you can’t get along without is a water hose, everything after that is optional.  Many gardeners use sprinklers or s drip irrigation hose.  There are even timers you can purchase for sprinklers or drip hoses, if you are willing to drop the extra cash. 

Gardening without gardening equipment would be a nightmare.  Sure there are some people who enjoy getting a little dirty while they plant their flowers, but even those types of people have the most basic of gardening tools, like a rake or a hoe.  Gardening equipment is a part of gardening, as important as the dirt and the seeds.

I ran across this article the other day –  ”trend toward smaller homes for thriftier seniors”

The article sites the following housing trends for the 50 and over market:

New house plans are getting a bit smaller – down to about 2300 sf average
People are looking for affordability
Folks are doing a lot of in home entertaining,  so open floor plans and kitchens with island seating are important.  Didn’t I see this on a golden girls episode?
People are seeking smaller house plans that still feel large – quote ”more space-efficient design concepts include using less space for hallways, fewer walls to give a more open feel, and more storage under stairways and above kitchen cabinets”  Are you kidding me?  These are cited as revolutionary concepts?
Seniors are open to smaller lots and higher densities
Clients are making less expensive choices – eschewing granite counters for other alternatives

Well I say it’s a great feeling to be in style again!  These are exactly the kinds of homes we have been designing for years atLarson Brenner Architects, and exactly the kinds of house plans I offer at Simply Elegant Home Designs.

And I have news.  The trends cited are not exclusive to the 50′s and over crowd.  These are the kinds of homes that our clients have been seeking for quite some time.  And most of our clients have been 30 and 40 somethings.  They are looking for a smaller yet highly functional and livable floor plan.  A house plan that is smarter and nicer.  Around here we call that ”just plain good design”.

Top 10 house plan websites

There are probably a million house plan companies selling zillions of plans through the internet.  Most are terrible.  In my business I create one of a kind custom homes.  I can’t tell you how many clients of mine have come to me after being frustrated looking through one plan book (or plan website) after another.  After exhaustive searching they will eventually break down and hire a competent house designer or an Architect.
I definitely beleive that if your needs are truly unique then you should hire a residential architect.  But if your needs and tastes are less specific you might be able to save yourself some time and money by going the predesigned plan route. So I decided to publish a list of the top 10 house plan websites that I have run across.  Here goes.

8. Southern Living House plans – Large collection of traditionally styled house plans.  All shapes, sizes and configurations.

7.  Southern Cottages – a modest collection of architect designed house plans.  Architectural styles are somewhat traditional with a contemporary twist.

6. John Tee Architect – Architect designed homes in predominantly southern american styles.  Plans in this fairly extensive collection are well executed.

5. Rick Thompson Architect – Collection of traditionally styled house plans.  Most of the collection is under 2000 square feet.

4. Coastal Living House Plans – A large collection of plans, many of which designed with a lake or coastal property in mind.  The architectural styles again are mostly traditional.  There are a good number of more “quirky” plans however, which makes for more fun surfing.

3. Simply Elegant Home Designs - Ok, well I had to list it.  It’s my own site after all.  This site does not yet have very many plans – but we are definitely going for quality.  We are going for a more edgy and more modern look.

2. Good Fit plans by Ross Chapin Architects – Modest collection of very well designed smaller homes.  Modernized cottage aesthetic.  Simple, clean and well done.

1. Architectural House Plans - This site specializes in unique Architect designed homes.  They started out being very selective and only published great plans.  The quality seems to be starting to go downhill a bit as the collection increases – but it is still a great source for architect designed house plans.

I’ll bet you are wondering where number 9 and 10 are.  Well it really is just that hard to find quality plans online.  After you spend a few hours browsing you realize that almost all the plans start looking alike.  In fact quite literally many of the plans are identical.  So I decided to spare the list down to 8.
